Veterans Benefits

Veterans Aid & Attendance Benefit

Did you know Veterans Benefits may pay for the cost of assisted living? Is your loved one a veteran? Are they married to a veteran? Or is your loved one the surviving spouse of a veteran?

If so, they may qualify for veterans benefits known as the “Aid & Attendance” benefit. This program will provide a monthly benefit that can help your loved one afford the costs associated with an assisted living facility. I meet with people everyday who have no idea that this benefit exists, therefore, I want to encourage you to share this information with anyone you know.

In order to qualify for the “Aid & Attendance” benefit:
  • You must be a veteran who served at least 90 days in active duty with at least one day served during wartime; and was honorably discharged.
  • You must be a surviving spouse of a veteran currently receiving nursing care or aid and attendance services.

Benefits Table

Status Benefit Amount
Surviving Spouse $1,130 per month
Single Veteran $1,758 per month
Married Veteran $2,085 per month
Two Vets Married $2,788 per month

These monthly benefits combined with social security, disability, long term care insurance and/or other retirement plans can help make the transition into assisted living an affordable option.

Another positive feature of the Aid & Attendance benefit is that its retroactive, meaning the benefit will pay a lump sum amount equal to the amount accrued while the application was being processed. This is an extremely effective feature because some assisted living facilities may defer a portion of their monthly rental costs until the applicant receives their VA pension. This makes it possible for your loved one to move into an assisted living facility before they receive their benefits, giving you peace of mind and your loved one the care they need.
